Book Care Review

If your students are anything like mine, they need frequent reminders about book care.  So I make sure that I review book care several times a year.

Last week it was book care review time with my firsties.  We read the story Penelope Popper, Book Doctor by Toni Buzzeo.

After reading the book, I brought out some of my book hospital supplies and demonstrated how they are used.

I also showed them some examples of books that had not been taken care of.

There may have been a few gasps when I showed them the book covered in mold.

After discussing the proper way to take care of library books, they went to their tables to work on this review sheet while waiting their turn to go to the shelves.  You can download this freebie HERE in my TpT store.  I'd love to know what you think of it, so please leave some feedback if you download it.

Do you do anything special to address book care?

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, friends!

The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to review some book care rules, and that is exactly what I will be doing with my kinder and firsties when we get back next week.

I use a fun PowerPoint I purchased on TpTs from The Library Fox.  You can purchase your copy HERE.  The first graders really went wild about it last year.  All I had to do after using this PowerPoint was say "Are you being a good library ninja?" and they immediately correct their behavior.

The set also comes with library ninja bookmarks, but I made my own bookmarks that reviews book care rules.  I pass these out at the end of our time together. You  can download these  HERE from my TpT store for free.

While some of my little ninjas are busy at the shelves, my other ninja friends are at their tables working on a review sheet about book care.  I made it be sort of a New Year's resolution type review.  You can download a copy of it HERE.

And if you'd rather have New Year's bookmarks, you can snag this 4 bookmark freebie in my Teacher's Dojo store HERE.

Or you can get a larger pack of 24  which includes 12 color and 12 black and white bookmarks for your friends to color for only $3.00 in my Teacher's Dojo store.  Click HERE to go there now.

Hope your 2016 is the best one yet!

Spooky Book Care Fun

$14.08 on Amazon

I love using the book Never Let a Ghost Borrow Your Library Book by Karen Casale to teach about book care. This week I have been using this book with kindergarten classes and they are loving it, too. (They especially like when I make kissing sounds for the part about loving your book soooo much.  ha! ha! ha!)

After we read the book, I have them complete a little sheet to review what things are harmful and not harmful to library books.  You can download a free copy of this review sheet HERE.

What are your favorite books to use to review book care?

New Year's Bookmarks and Book Care

I made two sets.  The first is a set of 4 free bookmarks which includes 2 color and 2 black and white bookmarks for your students to color.  You can get them HERE in my Teacher's Dojo store.

The second is a set of 24 bookmarks which includes 12 color and 12 black and white bookmarks for your students to color.  These are available HERE in my Teacher's Dojo store for $3.00.

For lessons this week, I decided to review book care with the kinders and firsties.

We read the book Never Let a Ghost Borrow Your Library Book by Karen Casale.

And then completed a little review sheet of how to take care of your library books.  You can get a copy of it free HERE.  I've also put  a link to this doc on my freebies page.

Next week I plan to do this lesson with the classes I missed this week so that I can get all caught up.  Then I have to start planning 100th Day centers.  The former first grade teacher in me gets very excited about the 100th Day of School.  =)

How is your new year going?

Book Care

Next week I will be letting the Kinders and Firsties check out from the BIG shelves for the first time this year.  It's a big step for them and I know they are really excited about it.  To get them ready, I have prepared a review lesson about how to choose a "just right" book and also how to take care of library books.  It seems they need a gentle reminder about book care as some of their books have begun being returned with extra pictures or missing pages in them.  I found a really cute book on the Kindergarten...Kindergarten blog called Forest Friends Go to School:  A Very, Very Sad Story (With a Happy Ending!) that I downloaded, printed, and put together.  You can find that book here.  It's perfect for this lesson on book care.

I tied our lesson together with these cute book care bookmarks.

Hope you enjoy the bookmark. You can get it HERE.
