Lots of Fun Ways to Celebrate Reading in February!

I can't believe it's almost February already! There are so many ways to celebrate reading in February.  Here are just a few that things that I've done in the past.

I always try to decorate the media center each month with a theme. These fun book signs are perfect for Valentine's Day and they are FREE in my TpT store. Click HERE to download them.  I would love your feedback on them.

My kiddos LOVE, LOVE, LOVE bookmarks, so I always make sure to put out new ones each month. You can snag some free Valentine's Day bookmarks in my TpT store HERE.

Or if you want more variety, you can purchase this bigger pack HERE.

Sometimes I like to have my kiddos practice shelf order. These fun red and white shelf order and call number centers are perfect for that.  They also work for Read Across America centers.

Last year, I started celebrating Love to Read Month and created this fun pack to help with that.  It includes bulletin board ideas as well as center ideas and signs.  You can purchase it HERE in my TpT store.

Here's a picture of a bulletin board I created last year to highlight the best loved books in our media center for the year.  The signs (minus the pictures of the books) used to create this bulletin board are included in the Love to Read Month pack.

Some of the centers included in the Love to Read Month pack include this ABC order center that comes with directions and an answer key...

An I Spy center that comes with directions, an answer sheet and words you can print and hide in bottles of colored rice...  (To see directions on how to create an I Spy bottle, click HERE.)

A Book Words center that includes directions and an answer sheet (you will need to purchase extra items for this center including magnetic letter tiles and a metal cookie sheet)...

Create a bookmark which includes a direction sign, just add coloring tools and strips of blank paper...

And Name That Book which comes with a directions sign, guessing slips and a sign for the top of the jar that the book scraps are placed in.  For this center, you will need to shred pages of a weeded book and place them in a clear container.

I've recently created a SUPER bundle of all of these resources to help you save. This bundle includes the Valentine's Day themed display signs, bookmarks, the Love to Read Month pack, and both the red and white call number and shelf order centers.  Click HERE to check it out.

February is Love to Read Month

We are celebrating reading this month as February is Love to Read Month.

Here are some fun way we've been celebrating reading.

We kicked off February with our Spring Book Fair.

The Book Fair is always so much fun and our students love getting new books to read.

And for the next two weeks, our students participated and continue to participate in our Love to Read Month centers.

Here is what our centers look like:

Amazing ABC Order

Students use Styrofoam cups that have authors' names written on them to stack the cups in ABC order. They can then check their answers to see if they were correct.

I Spy

Students look for library words hidden in rice.  I use a small orange juice bottle to put the rice in.  I copy the words on to cardstock, laminate it and cut them out.  Then I place the words into the bottle with the rice.  Students have to shake the bottle in order to find the words.   When they find a word, they write it down. They try to find as many words as they can.

Book Words

Using magnetic letter tiles, students spell as many words as they can think of that have to do with books and reading.  They write their words down on a recording sheet.

Book Love

Students write about their favorite book.  These slips are then put onto our special bulletin board in the hallway for everyone to read.  Hopefully someone will find a new book to read based on what other students love.

Create-a-Bookmark

Student create and color their own bookmarks to keep or give away.

Puzzles

Students work on completing puzzles with a book theme.

Name That Book

Students try to guess the book that has been shredded.  (Don't worry.  This was a book that had sever water damage and could no longer circulate.)

And to tie it all together, I created a special bulletin board of our most favorite reads based on circulation for the past year.  I just love how it turned out.

I have put all of these center signs, forms, and bulletin board display signs in a packet.  You can purchase this packet in my TpT store HERE or in my Teacher's Dojo store by clicking HERE.

Are you celebrating Love to Read Month?  I'd love to hear about it.  Drop me a line in the comments and let me know.
