Super Bowl Fun in the Media Center

It's almost Super Bowl Sunday!  Are your students getting excited about the big game? Why not bring in some pregame excitement to the Media Center?

These fun library centers will help your students practice shelf order and call numbers in a fun way.

This center has students sort call numbers into the main sections they would fit into- Easy (or Everybody, Everyone), Fiction, and Nonfiction.  You can check out this center HERE in my TpT store OR  HERE in my Teacher's Dojo store.

This center allows students to practice putting call numbers in shelf order.  It includes an easy, average, and a challenge level so even your upper elementary students will be challenged.  You can check out this center HERE in my TpT store OR  HERE in my Teacher's Dojo store.

Or you can get the bundle of these two centers and save. Click HERE to view them in my TpT store.

To make these centers even more fun, you can play them Minute to Win It style.  Make several sets and have groups or tables compete to put the cards in the correct order in just one minute.  The kids love it and they are learning at the same time!

Are you doing anything special for Super Bowl Sunday?

Football Fun

It's almost Super Bowl time so it's the perfect time for some football themed centers.

This week, second graders practiced shelf order with my football themed shelf order center.  I first reviewed how and why books are organized in the Media Center and then we moved to tables to practice shelf order.

To make it more like a game, we played the center in Minute to Win It style.  I set a timer I found on YouTube and students raced to be the first to finish putting cards in the correct order.  We played it several times and they begged to play it again.  It was a big hit!

You can purchase a copy of my football themed shelf order centers in my TpT store. There are three different levels of difficulty in this center: easy, average and challenge. Click HERE to see it now.

I also have a football themed call number sorting center.  This center asks students to separate their cards by call number type.  Click HERE to see it now.

Are you doing anything special to celebrate the Super Bowl in your Media Center?  Let me know in the comments below.  =)

Super Bowl Fun

Call Number Sorting Center                                 Shelf Order Center

With the Super Bowl coming up next weekend, I brought out these fun shelf order centers last week.

These Call Number Puzzles from Jennifer Siderius also make for a fun center.  At least one puzzle has a sports theme.

We played a game of Minute to Win It to see if they could sort the cards in one minute.  It made it really fun.  Not too many finished, but they all enjoyed it.  I used the fact that not many finished to point out the importance of using a shelf marker to keep books in order otherwise they could end up like a big unorganized mess...like their sorting cards were before they put them in order.

You can find these DEMCO book-stops HERE.

I retaught students about the sports and leisure genre and reminded them where the non-fiction sports books and biographies are.  I also book talked some of the fiction sports books we have in our collection.

Although it is usually a pretty popular non-fiction section, the 700s were even more heavily checked out last week.  Hopefully that trend will continue.  Sometimes it just takes a little reminder.

We also just received a shipment of 170 new non-fiction books.  I will be working frantically to get them shelf ready and into my patrons' hands as soon as possible.

Always a fun time in the media center! What's going on in your media center this week?

Centers for Super Bowl Fans

I'm sooooo not a football fan.  If I watch the Super Bowl at all, it's for the commercials.  However, many of my patrons are big football fans, so I thought I would take advantage of that and make some centers with a football theme.

I created a football themed call number sorting center where students must determine what section that call number would belong in: Easy (or Everybody/Everyone), Fiction, or Non-fiction.  You can check out this center HERE in my TpT store.

I also created a football themed shelf order center where students must put the cards in shelf order.  I made 3 different levels for Easy (or Everybody/Everyone), Fiction (with both FIC and F options) and Non-fiction.  You can check out this center HERE in my TpT store.

Both sets come with color and black and white options to save on ink.  You could print the black and white on colored paper or cardstock to make it more fun.  I have laminated my pieces so that they will last longer.

Both centers will be 50% through midnight (EST) tonight, so grab 'em up now.

I am pairing these centers with a lesson on the Sports and Leisure genre.  I thought to make it more fun, I would let them see if they could sort the cards Minute-to-Win-It style.  I found a fun countdown clock on YouTube that I show.

I changed the call numbers on both of these centers so that students who had previously played the Winter themed centers would have a fresh set of cards.  I have used both sets with two fourth grade classes already.  They liked the timer and it made them realize how important it is to keep the shelves neat because it takes a while to put books in the correct order.  I really think the other classes are going to enjoy it, too.

Happy PreSuper Bowl Week!
