Everybody Book Series

Our media center is set up so that students can easily browse for books that they want to read and are able to read independently.  One of the sections in our media center houses our everybody picture books, sometimes referred to as easy books or picture books.

These books are placed on the shelf in alphabetical order by author's last name, but occasionally I will place them on top of the shelf on a smaller "spotlight" to save shelf space.

To make locating a book even easier, I use Demco book stops to label the series, if we have at least 3 books in a series.  Since I began using book stops, students are much more independent when they are looking for books, which helps when I am stuck behind the circulation desk.

What series or authors do you have in the picture book section of your library media center?

#toptentitles Everybody Books

Today's post is about the top ten Everybody books, sometimes called the Easy section or picture book section.

The top ten is a little bit all over the place, although I did notice that Pete the Cat, Scaredy Squirrel and Froggy books showed up more than once.

Number ten was a major tie between 12 books.  I was happy to see that that Miss Brooks Loves Books made it to the top ten and a little surprised that Creepy Carrots wasn't higher on the list. However, we didn't get Creepy Carrots until later in the year, so that could be the reason.

Number nine was a tie between 10 books. I was happy that Pumpkin, Pumpkin ranked high as well as "L" is for Library.

Number eight was a tie between 3 books and Pete the Cat's first top ten showing.  I found it funny that More Parts made it to the top ten, but Parts and Even More Parts didn't.

Number seven was a tie between 5 books.  I have seen a trend in Cynthia Rylant books making it to the top ten.  I can attribute some of that to the fact that we have around 30 books by Rylant.  Of course, it could also be because she wrote some great books.

The number six spot again has a Rylant book as well as a cute little book about some mice.  Animal fiction books are always a big hit.

The top five spot is shared by two books, one of which, The Best Nest, is one of my personal favorites.  It reminds me of  when I was young and my dad would read that book to me for a bedtime story.  I still have my copy of that book and have read it to my own kids.

The number four spot is from a book I picked up later in the year, but apparently was a big hit with patrons.  I can't decide if this book is popular because patrons love pink or if it's because they don't like it.

The number three spot is held by a Laura Numeroff book and a book I picked up at last year's Children's Literature Conference. I was thrilled to see I Need My Monster make it to the top ten.

Number two goes to another Pete the Cat book.

And the number one spot goes to

To be fair, we have four copies of this title so it has more of a chance of being checked out than most books, but Llama Llama books are always a patron fav.

Top 10 Everybody Books of the Year

We have quite a few picture books in our Everybody section.  Here are the top ten Everybody books based on checkouts last year.

#10 was a tie between

Angelina and the Butterfly by Katharine Holabird,

Charlotte's Web: Wilbur's Prize by Jennifer Frantz,

Max's Dragon Shirt by Rosemary Wells, 

and Peter's Secret by Christiane Duchesne

with 12 checkouts each.

#9 was a five-way tie between

Zoo-Looking by Mem Fox,

Pretty Good Magic by Cathy East Dubowski, 

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin, by Margaret McNamara,

Fly Guy Vs. the Flyswatter by Ted Arnold,

and Cook-a-Doodle-Doo by Janet Stevens.

Each had 13 checkouts apiece. 

#8 was also a tie between

Pigs will Be Pigs: Fun with Math and Money by Amy Axelrod,

Mr. Wolf's Pancakes by Jan Fearnley,

Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad by David Soman,

and Corduroy by Don Freeman.

Each had 15 checkouts.

Another tie for #7:

Shy Charles by Rosemary Wells,

The Little Engine That Could Helps Out by Watty Piper

and Angelina Has the Hiccups by Katharine Holabird.

Each had 16 checkouts.

#6 was So, What's It Like to Be a Cat? by Karla Kuskin

with 17 checkouts.

#5 was The Shivers in the Fridge by Fran Manushkin

with 18 checkouts.

#4 was My Lucky Day by Keiko Kasza

with 19 checkouts.

#3 was yet another tie between

Olivia and the Fairy Princesses by Ian Falconer

and I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll

with 20 checkouts each.

#2 was Duck at the Door by Jackie Urbanovic

with 24 checkouts.

And the #1 checked out Everybody book at my school  for the third year in a row was

Llama Llama red Pajama by Anna Dewdney

with 38 checkouts.
