I then go over the Five Finger Test and we also watch a short video on Brain Pop Jr. about choosing a book. If you have a subscription, you can watch the video by clicking here. I start the video at 2:22.
Finally, I let the kiddos color on a worksheet I made to help them remember what we talked about. You can get a copy of the worksheet here or by clicking on the picture above. If you are having trouble downloading the file, please refer to the picture below.
These "Good Fit Book" bookmarks would be fun to pass out, too. You can get them here or by clicking on the picture above.
How do you teach "Just Right" books?
I use this book, too. It's a very cute story about choosing books that are just right. I stopped emphasizing the 5 finger method a few years ago, though, when I asked a student to read a paragraph and count the number of words he didn't know. As he read, I counted 7 mistakes. When I asked him how many words he didn't know, he said "none"! Sometimes they don't know that they don't know!
ReplyDeleteI find that they need a chance to practice the five finger test with a teacher several times in order to really understand and know how to use it. That's what we'll be doing next week. =)
DeleteGreat lesson - thank you!
ReplyDeleteGlad you like it. =)
DeleteI could not get the copies of the color page or book marks to open for me. Can you send them to me or repost?
